(CNF:NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange ) announced today a major enhancement in its electronic commerce services for its customers. Users of the company's web site (www.con-way.com) can now send their less-than-truckload (LTL LTL - Linear Temporal Logic ) freight pick-up requests to CON-WAY service centers by way of the Internet. CON-WAY operates a national network of three less-than-truckload regional trucking companies and in 1995 was the first LTL carrier to launch an Internet web site. Since the site was opened CON-WAY has continued to add information and e-commerce functionality to help their customers complete their business transactions. "Transportation and logistics professionals are relying on the World Wide Web more each day. Our online pickup notice service is simply an extension of our continuing technology initiative in the e-commerce business-to-business arena on behalf of our customers. The convenience and time-savings will be very significant to them and translate into real dollar savings," said Bryan Millican, executive vice president of sales and marketing for CON-WAY. The new service is called Web Pickup Requests. Millican cited growing customer use of the CON-WAY web site, extensive beta testing (programming) beta testing - Testing a pre-release (potentially unreliable) version of a piece of software by making it available to selected users. This term derives from early 1960s terminology for product cycle checkpoints, first used at IBM but later standard throughout the and customer input as important factors that led to the design of the new service. "As the business-to-business e-commerce environment expands we are taking the lead from the input our customers are giving us and responding to their informational needs," said Millican. Customers can send their pick-up requests from either the QuickTools or PowerTools areas of CON-WAY's web site. "No registration or password is required if the request is made from the QuickTools menu. If the user is a registered customer for secured access to the PowerTools section of the site, we're able to identify their shipping information from our database, and automatically pre-populate their pickup request. This reduces the data entry time and speeds up the process," added Millican. All online pickup requests will be confirmed with the customer by either e-mail or phone. Company officials also announced a second web-based enhancement. Customers can now file and track a cargo loss or damage claim online. "These most recent improvements are part of a very defined business-to-business electronic commerce strategy. In the near future we anticipate announcing an electronic bill of lading A document signed by a carrier (a transporter of goods) or the carrier's representative and issued to a consignor (the shipper of goods) that evidences the receipt of goods for shipment to a specified designation and person. and additional web-based automation that will be integrated into our computer aided dispatch system producing even great efficiencies for our customers," said Millican. In July the company redesigned their web site with a number of customer-recommended improvements that included faster navigation, the ability to receive up to 10 shipment documents from a single request and quicker access to transactional functions. "Since its debut in 1995 as primarily a source for company information, the site has evolved into an e-commerce transactional service point," said Millican. Service enhancements have included single and multiple shipment tracking capabilities, transit time transit time the time required for ingesta to pass through the gastrointestinal tract; a shorter transit time is seen in conditions associated with gut hypermotility, such as diarrhea. After viewing a document on screen, customers can print the document locally or then fax or email it to anywhere in the world. Customers can also locate a CON-WAY service center and receive a transit map, which details delivery times by day increments. Shipment tracking by purchase order or bill of lading and multiple document viewing are also available to customers. Manifests that can also be viewed include inbound and outbound shipments, new shipments, exception shipments and third party shipments.
