) has found the e-commerce capability of Con-Way Transportation Services (CON-WAY) to be the highest of any less-than-truckload (L-T-L) carrier in the U.S.

According to the survey results Morgan Stanley Dean Witter believes that "freight transportation customers intend to conduct substantially more transactions electronically, and, as such, we expect those carriers with the best electronic interfaces to have the best prospects." They also said that "when it comes to e-commerce trends, we believe the fastest modes of transportation are going to grow at the expense of the slower modes." The purpose of the survey was to determine how e-commerce will change the transportation methods of shippers and document basic industry trends that may influence future performance of publicly traded companies publicly traded company

The survey was sent to 8,000 shippers and asked for responses on all modes of freight, from parcel carriers to railroads. Trucking was shown to be the largest form of transport used by the respondents, accounting for 54 percent of the respondents' selected transport mode.

"The results of the Morgan Stanley Dean Witter report validate what we see happening in our markets," said Bryan Millican, executive vice president, sales and marketing for CON-WAY. "We opened the first L-T-L Internet web site in 1994 and increased our investment in this means of completing customer transactions each year since."

CON-WAY continually measures the activity and transaction growth on its web site. "During the past 18 months we have been adding capabilities to our site that provide real transaction value to our customers, and the growth rate by users has shown we've hit the mark. In the past year we've seen month-over-month growth of between 20 and 25 percent. The response has been phenomenal," said Millican.

"We'll still have customers completing transactions on paper, but we feel confident that the majority of transactions will shift to being electronic during this period and we'll be ready as this shift happens," she added.
