COMPUTER GEAR SET FOR STUDENTS HEWLETT-PACKARD GIVES $100,000 WIRELESS MOBILE CLASSROOM TO COLLEGE OF CANYONS.

VALENCIA - The College of the Canyons' Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement Program has received $100,000 worth of equipment from the Hewlett-Packard Co.

The college was granted a complete HP Wireless Mobile Classroom consisting of 30 wireless notebook computers A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. The award is part of HP's 2003 Community College Pre-Engineering and Computer Science Grant, an initiative aimed at increasing the number of underrepresented un·der·rep·re·sent·ed  
adj.
Insufficiently or inadequately represented: the underrepresented minority groups, ignored by the government. 
 students pursuing high-tech careers.

The MESA Program at the college is part of a statewide network of programs that assist educationally disadvantaged students majoring in math, engineering and the sciences.

The new equipment will be used in engineering, mathematics and other technical courses, designed to train students as computer engineers and scientists.

``Everyone at MESA is excited about the award,'' said Susan Crowther, the MESA program director. ``Our students and our faculty advisers are thrilled about how this equipment will enhance the quality of learning experiences for our students.''

MESA's primary goal is to prepare students to transfer to universities to study science, math and technology. Students in the program participate in a variety of rigorous academic activities and support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services  that include academic excellence workshops, calculator calculator or calculating machine, device for performing numerical computations; it may be mechanical, electromechanical, or electronic. HP has a long history of investing in programs like MESA that help low- income, minority, and first-generation college students achieve academic success and become prepared for transfer to universities as computer science or computer engineering majors.

The equipment is scheduled to arrive at the college by early June. The MESA staff will have a chance to experiment with the technology before using it in classes in the fall.
