COMPUTER ASSOCIATES RESULTS EXCEED EXPECTATIONS; Billion Dollar Quarter, Revenue Increases 39%.


ISLANDIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 17, 1996--Fueled by continuing demand for CA-Unicenter and other client/server solutions, Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE NYSE

: CA) today announced record results for its fiscal third quarter, marking the 17th consecutive quarter of double-digit revenue growth.

For the quarter ended December 31, 1995, revenue was $1,004,439,000, an increase of 39% over the $721,032,000 reported in the previous year's third quarter. Net income for the quarter was $227,178,000, an increase of 30% over last year's $174,206,000. Income per share was $.90 compared to $.69 a year ago, adjusted for the August 1995 three-for-two stock split.

For the nine months ended December 31, 1995, revenue was $2,394,207,000, an increase of 31% over the $1,821,003,000 reported in the previous year. Net income and income per share, exclusive of a charge for purchased research and development associated with the acquisition of Legent Corporation and a similar charge last year associated with the acquisition of The ASK Group, Inc., were $486,581,000 and $1.92 an increase of 30% over the $373,568,000 and $1.48 for the first nine months of the prior year. After the charges, the net loss and loss per share were $321,453,000 and $1.33 compared with net income of $219,002,000 and income per share of $.87 from the corresponding period last year.

Excludes the write-off of $1,303,280,000 (pre-tax) for purchased research and
development associated with the acquisition of Legent Corporation.  With this
charge, loss before taxes for the nine months would be $524,770,000, net loss
would be $321,453,000, and net loss per share would have been $1.33 (see
table below).
