COMPUTER ASSOCIATES AND FUJITSU ANNOUNCE MAJOR ALLIANCE; Largest American/Japanese Software Venture Gives Critical Mass To Object Technology; First Product From Partnership: Integrated Relational/Object Extension To CA-OpenIngres.

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1995--Computer Associates and Fujitsu Limited today announced a major strategic alliance to make object database management technology a compelling solution for the next generation of business challenges facing application developers around the world.

The scope of the alliance includes joint development, marketing, and support of object technology. New products from the partnership will be delivered as extensions to the CA-OpenIngres product line that combines the best of relational and object-oriented technologies together in an extensible object-relational database. The first new product, CA-OpenIngres/ODBMS includes Fujitsu's ODB-II object database technology. CA-OpenIngres/ODBMS addresses the rapidly growing number of applications in which complex data --such as multimedia data including images, voice and video, CAD drawings, seismic, and time-data-- needs to be processed along with more traditional character and numeric information. These data types are beyond the scope of today's relational databases. In addition to CA-OpenIngres/ODBMS, an enhanced ODB-II based on the embedded CA-OpenIngres technology will be delivered.

By integrating object and relational technology within a single DBMS, CA-OpenIngres/ODBMS provides users throughout the enterprise an intelligent and safe solution without the pain of sacrificing investments made in relational databases.

Dan Fishman, vice president and general manager of Fujitsu's Object Software Division based in San Jose, California and a recognized expert and pioneer in the development of object database technology, said the strategic alliance will create a "significant critical mass" for object databases and finally lead to market acceptance and implementation in the enterprise.

"Until now, customers have been hesitant to move to object database systems because of the unclear pathway for evolution. Combining CA's market experience and leadership in relational databases with Fujitsu's object competencies will provide customers with the requisite resources and technology to bring object solutions to the enterprise," Fishman said.

Russell M. Artzt, CA executive vice president of research and development, said the CA-OpenIngres/ODBMS is a technology extension of the current Ingres engine that takes full advantage of both technologies. "Every Ingres user worldwide has a choice now between pure object, pure relational and fully integrated object-relational without giving up any of the benefits of the three approaches. Any or all can be combined."

Furukawa said that Fujitsu has had development teams working on object technology since 1988. Fujitsu is the eighth largest database vendor in the world, according to International Data Corporation. The company is making a major commitment to the U.S. software market in addition to deployment in Asia and Europe, where it has introduced its object technology through its strategic alliance partner, ICL.

"Object oriented technology is important, and the object/relational products coming from the new CA/Fujitsu alliance offer higher performance than alternative approaches and allow developers to make the transition to objects without rewriting their relational applications," said Chet Geschickter, vice president of research, Hurwitz Consulting Group, Watertown, MA. "CA has leapfrogged the other players in object technology by implementing at the core level of the data base. The other object database players will have to play catch-up now. Oracle and Sybase are not even in the ball game."

The CA-OpenIngres/ODBMS system development toolkit (SDK) will be delivered to customers later this year and a fully integrated object/relational database will be ready for clients in the first half of 1996. The architectural details and an early demonstration of CA-OpenIngres/ODBMS will be unveiled at CA World, CA's worldwide user conference, July 16-21 in New Orleans.
