COMPUSERVE REDUCES CONNECT RATES BY UP TO 40 PERCENT

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- CompuServe Incorporated has lowered rates for hourly-priced services on the CompuServe Information Service, the leading worldwide online information service for personal computer users.
Effective Feb. 6, connect rates for hourly-priced services under CompuServe's Standard Pricing Plan become:
Baud Rate Old Hourly Connect Fee NEW HOURLY CONNECT FEE
 300 $6.00 $4.80
 1200-2400 $8.00 $4.80
 9600-14400 $16.00 $9.60
The new rates represent a 40 percent reduction for most members in the cost of accessing such areas as CompuServe's popular interactive forums, premium travel services, financial services, reference databases and entertainment offerings.
"The use of advanced technology and the integration of 'commodity'- priced hardware in conjunction with our host computer systems has resulted in lower operating costs. We are pleased to pass this savings on to our members in the form of substantially lower connect rates," said Barry F. Berkov, executive vice president of CompuServe's Information Services Division. "The rate decrease strengthens CompuServe's position as the information service offering the most value for your online dollar."
CompuServe's last price reduction came in March 1993 when hourly connect fees for members under the Standard Pricing Plan were lowered by as much as 40 percent.
In addition to hourly-priced services, CompuServe members have access to more than 50 basic services for a flat fee of $8.95 per month. CompuServe offers access at modem speeds of 14,400 bits per second in many major cities, the only major online service to do so, and at the same cost as access at 9,600 bits per second.
"We have the financial strength and stability to allow us to reduce our rates while continuing to offer the most extensive range of services in the industry," said Berkov.
Established in 1979, the CompuServe Information Service has a worldwide membership of 1.6 million, and is adding 60,000 new members per month. CompuServe provides its members with nearly 2,000 databases and services to meet both business and personal interests. The service can be accessed by any modem-equipped personal computer utilizing the CompuServe Information Manager graphical interface or any general communications software.
In addition to the CompuServe Information Service, CompuServe Incorporated provides frame relay, wide and local area networking services, electronic mail, business information services and software to major corporations and government agencies worldwide.
CompuServe is an H&R Block (NYSE: HRB) company.
