COMPOST PILE BURNS; SMOLDERING FIRE BREAKS OUT AGAIN IN RECYCLING YARD.

The Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  was filled with heavy smoke Saturday when a stubborn fire erupted in a Newhall area recycling yard.

The fire first developed Friday, was doused, and broke out again Saturday, officials said.

Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Greenwaste and Construction Recycling yard at 23802 Pine St. and stamped it out before noon.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Cortlandt Myers said the blaze burned between 300 and 600 yards before it was contained.

``(Firefighters) thought they had it put out and then (Saturday morning) the thing flared up again,'' Myers said.

Residents near the recycling yard and those as far away as Canyon Country called the sheriff's station Saturday complaining about dark smoke covering the valley.

``People were calling us very concerned,'' Myers said. ``Some asked was the world coming to an end and we told them no, that the smoke was the result of a compost pile Noun 1. compost pile - a heap of manure and vegetation and other organic residues that are decaying to become compost

Myers said it is unclear how the fire began. There was no structure damage, he said.
