It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. was filled with heavy smoke Saturday when a stubborn fire erupted in a Newhall area recycling yard. The fire first developed Friday, was doused, and broke out again Saturday, officials said. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Cortlandt Myers said the blaze burned between 300 and 600 yards before it was contained. ``(Firefighters) thought they had it put out and then (Saturday morning) the thing flared up again,'' Myers said. Residents near the recycling yard and those as far away as Canyon Country called the sheriff's station Saturday complaining about dark smoke covering the valley. ``People were calling us very concerned,'' Myers said. ``Some asked was the world coming to an end and we told them no, that the smoke was the result of a compost pile Noun 1. compost pile - a heap of manure and vegetation and other organic residues that are decaying to become compost compost heap cumulation, heap, pile, agglomerate, cumulus, mound - a collection of objects laid on top of each other burning.''
