COMPETING AT WESTLAKE; TENNIS PLAYERS REMEMBER THEIR LOCAL CHAMPION.

More than 70 professional and amateur tennis players teamed up Sunday at the North Ranch ranch, large farm devoted chiefly to raising and breeding cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. The cattle ranch was introduced from Latin America to Texas and the plains of the W United States and Canada.  Country Club to pay tribute to David Grosser in the second annual tennis tournament named in his memory.

The Westlake Village man was competing in the final tie-breaking round of a local tournament when he collapsed.

Grosser had won first place in the North Ranch Country Club's annual pro-am tournament in 1995. Soon after his death, the club's tennis directors renamed the tournament in his honor HIS HONOR. A title given by the constitution of Massachusetts to the lieutenant governor of that commonwealth. Const. part 2, c. 2, s. 2, art. 1. It, is also customarily given to some inferior magistrates, as the mayor of a city. .

``He was always so competitive in tennis. I was so touched by the idea of naming the tournament after him,'' said his widow, Marilyn, who competed in the tournament Sunday.

``It's so wonderful to see the community support our family this way,'' she said.

Thirty-six pairs - each a professional-level player teamed with an amateur - competed in doubles tennis matches throughout the morning and afternoon Sunday.

Last year's event raised about $6,000 for cardiovascular research. Organizers this year hope to raise more than $8,000 for the American Heart Assocation.

Additionally, area merchants offered gift certificates and packages for raffle prizes, while a $100 registration fee for amateurs helped raise cash prizes for the top professional players.

Along with raising money for a cause and having fun, the tournament was a memorial for ``a great person and friend,'' said Dexter dexter /dex·ter/ (deks´ter) [L.] right; on the right side.

 and reminisced about a man whose passion for competition on the courts has survived him.

``We were just talking about how much David enjoyed playing in these tournaments,'' said Joel Corwin, one of Grosser's close friends.

``It means a lot to me to compete in this tournament. I think about him a lot,'' he said.
