In observance of this year's Geography Awareness Week, which started Sunday, Placerita Junior High School in Newhall will host a seventh-grade Family Geography Night 6 to 8 p.m. today in the gym. English and science teacher Wave Lee Stonerock came up with the event, which includes 26 different stations with activities. The group encourages geography awareness and promotes the teaching of geography in schools. ``Most people think that geography is just states and capitals, but it includes the environment, society and just about anything that you can think of,'' Stonerock said. ``It is the study of the Earth and includes many other subjects. ``When a student is doing a book report and talks about the setting, that's geography. Geography is the thread that weaves the entire junior high curriculum together.'' This is the third year for Family Geography Night, and it has developed quite a reputation for being a good time. Stonerock has received more than 400 requests for tickets, but space is still available. Tickets are free and can be reserved by calling Stonerock at (661) 259-1551. ``The event is popular because it's a fun evening,'' Stonerock said. ``We have activities for every age group, and families can come and go as they please. It's a very informal, relaxed atmosphere.''
