COMPAQ UNVEILS POWERFUL BUSINESS AUDIO ENHANCEMENTS: MICROSOFT'S

WINDOWS SOUND SYSTEM INCLUDED WITH DESKPRO/i AND DESKPRO/M FAMILIES
HOUSTON, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ), which in June broke new ground in the area of PC audio technology, today boosted its Business Audio capabilities with the announcement that it will integrate Microsoft's new Windows Sound System into the COMPAQ DESKPRO/i and COMPAQ DESKPRO/M Windows Edition families of desktop personal computers as a standard feature.
The merging of Windows Sound System software into these products allows Compaq to extend Business Audio to a new level, providing customers with easier-to-use, productive business-oriented capabilities.
Business Audio technology provides low-cost, high-quality sound by integrating audio hardware onto the system board. Initial Business Audio applications enabled Windows users to record, embed and play back voice messages anywhere within Windows 3.1 documents. With the help of Business Audio, users have already been adding voice to documents for later reference, sending notes via electronic mail, and producing voice- illustrated presentations and training programs.
"Business Audio has begun to change the way people think about and use personal computers," said Richard Swingle, Vice President of Desktop Marketing, PC Division, Compaq Computer Corporation.
"We're continuing to raise the bar in providing the greatest value to our customers, and the Business Audio enhancements we are announcing today are a good example of this. Business Audio delivers immediate benefits, such as increased productivity and better communications," Swingle added.
The announcement of the Windows Sound System signals the next step in Business Audio functionality. This new suite of applications developed by Microsoft takes direct advantage of the COMPAQ Business Audio Hardware. The Windows Sound System software now adds voice feedback and input to the computing environment, while it improves the interface for integrating voice into documents. Windows Sound System Features
Beginning in October, the new suite of applications will be delivered with all COMPAQ DESKPRO/i hard drive models and all COMPAQ DESKPRO/M Windows Edition Models. Windows Sound System software includes:
o Volume Control -- enabling the user to control the volume and
balance of sounds as they are played back
o Recording Control -- allowing users to set the recording level
 and balance of their voice
o Quick Recorder -- providing a seamless method for integrating
 voice into documents
o ProofReader -- a proofreading tool for spreadsheets
o Voice Pilot -- allowing "hands-free" command of Windows
 3.1 applications
o Music Box -- a virtual on-screen CD player that allows users to
control audio CDs through their computer's CD ROM drive
o Sound Control -- links sound files to system events
o Sound Finder -- a file management utility that allows the user to
link an icon and a description to sound files.
"Our focus on audio as a productivity tool is a result of Microsoft's work with corporate customers," said Paul Maritz, senior vice president, Systems Division, Microsoft Corporation. "The Windows Sound System incorporates business-oriented audio features specifically designed for individuals in networked work groups, finance, sales/marketing and training. We applaud Compaq for developing such highly integrated products for these types of users," Maritz added.
In May of this year, Compaq, Microsoft and Analog Devices announced a partnership surrounding the development of products focused on audio for business environments.
One month later, on June 15, Compaq delivered the first products that benefited from this relationship: the COMPAQ DESKPRO/i family and the COMPAQ DESKPRO/M Windows Edition models, all featuring Business Audio capabilities. Since that time, business users have integrated audio into their mainstream PC applications, simplifying the communication process and increasing their productivity.
Microsoft's Windows Sound System product includes a high quality audio board that is compatible with the COMPAQ Business Audio solution. This will provide audio capabilities to the millions of COMPAQ PCs installed throughout the world.
"Customers have embraced Business Audio as the next level in business computing," added Swingle. "Compaq will continue to improve Business Audio functionality for our customers and for the rest of the industry." Company Background
