 COMPAQ ANNOUNCES PERIPHERALS DIVISION,
 TARGETS HIGH-GROWTH NETWORK PRINTER MARKET
HOUSTON, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ), building on its leadership in PC networks and capping a three-year, behind-the-scenes research and development effort, today announced the creation of a worldwide Peripherals Division devoted to the development and marketing of COMPAQ printers and printer-related products. With the launch of its initial printer products later this year, Compaq will enter one of the fastest-growing segments of the printer industry -- the network printer market.
Compaq also announced the role of David Black -- who in previous positions directed development of COMPAQ desktop and portable computers -- as vice president and general manager of the new division. A Compaq veteran, Black has been with Compaq since 1985. Black reports to Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq president and chief executive officer.
"When Compaq announced new products on June 15th that covered a broad range of customer needs, from low-cost to high-performance, we expressed our determination to compete in the full spectrum of the PC market," said Pfeiffer. "Compaq's aggressive move into the printer market further broadens our product reach and is based on our ability to provide innovative, high-quality products that differentiate us. Compaq's brand-name awareness, together with the ability to leverage our worldwide distribution channels, established service and support programs and expertise in network testing and integration, favorably position us to quickly capture customers who are looking for quality network printers."
The worldwide printer market is expected to grow to $30.6 billion by 1995 according to Compaq estimates. COMPAQ network printer products will complement and enhance the company's advanced servers, network management tools, desktop nodes and other systems offerings, providing a key component in the company's strategy to provide total networked solutions.
Members of the Peripherals Division have been conducting extensive market research and developing printer-related technology for more than three years. As a result of cutting-edge technology development, Compaq has been issued a number of printer-related patents, some of which will be incorporated into the first COMPAQ products in this new category. A large number of patents have been filed by the company for various printer-related technology. "Compaq's highly skilled printer staff has been diligently working to provide innovative solutions to real problems users face," said Black. "I believe customers will be very pleased with what we deliver."
Last October Compaq announced a reorganization to establish two separate and distinct product divisions -- the PC Division and the Systems Division -- to create a sharper focus on Compaq's primary business areas. The Peripherals Division represents the third major business area for Compaq and assumes the same responsibilities and importance as the other two divisions.
The Peripherals Division has several distinct organizations reporting to Black, including Product Development, Marketing, Operations and Technology Development. The staff of the Peripherals Division is complemented by peripheral sales, marketing and service/support personnel within North America, Europe and Asia/Pacific. The product and geographic peripherals groups are fully staffed with professionals with strong backgrounds in the printer industry.
