managing development

You can feel the energy in this young and vibrant city, where thousands move each year to raise families in an area known for its low crime rate, good schools and healthy business climate.

The valley population has passed the 200,000 mark, making Santa Clarita a good-size city that will continue to grow for decades. And it is home to one of the largest industrial complexes in the state.

The question is whether growth will diminish the quality of life that is pulling new residents into valley communities like Newhall, Saugus, Castaic, Canyon Country, Agua Dulce and Stevenson Ranch. Environmentalists argue that Los Angeles County and city of Santa Clarita officials are allowing development that is destroying the landscape once trod upon by American Indians. Already, the region suffers some of the worst air quality in the nation.

The Santa Clara River Santa Clara River may refer to:
  • Santa Clara River (California), a river in Southern California, United States.
  • Santa Clara River (Utah), a river in Utah, United States
  • Carmen River, a river in Mexico that is sometimes called the Santa Clara River
doesn't flow anymore. But it is still home to a number of endangered plants and small creatures that have prompted continued debate.

Foothills have been scraped and reshaped as foundations for more neighborhoods.

At the same time, city and state officials are preserving some wilderness around the valley. Santa Clarita city government has poured millions of dollars into recreation programs and public transit.

Most leaders' philosophy is that development will come houses will be built and businesses established to create jobs but the battle is over the very sensitive issues of planning how it happens.
