) today introduced its new low-cost small package 8-bit TLCS-870 microcontrollers (MCUs). The new devices come in a 44-pin quad flat package (QFP (Quad FlatPack) A square, surface mount chip package that has leads on all four sides and comes in several varieties. PQFP (Plastic QFP) may refer to all of the following QFP types. All quad flatpacks use gull-wing leads, except for the CQFP, which stick straight out. ), 10mm x 10mm, with a thickness of 1.5mm. Even though these new devices are compact in size they offer a large code space, low power consumption down to 2.7 volts (V) and 8 kilobytes (KB) of on-board ROM, for under $2.

"Toshiba continues an ongoing commitment to further develop and expand our 8-bit microcontroller product offering," said Erich Volk, market development specialist for Toshiba's microcomputer products. "Where board real estate is at a premium, this new feature-rich, small package 8-bit MCU (1) (MicroController Unit) A computer on a single chip. See microcontroller.

(2) (Multipoint Control Unit) A device that is used to moderate a videoconference of three or more end points (users at computers or groups of users
is an ideal solution. Next generation end products tend to be smaller, lighter and thinner, and by offering this new 8-bit device Toshiba continues to meet market demands."

Designated TMP TMP (thymidine monophosphate): see thymine. 87C807U and TMP87PH47U (OTP (1) (One Time Programmable) Refers to programming content or logic into chips such as EPROMs and EEPROMs, which cannot be reversed. See antifuse.

(2) (One Time P
), these new devices operate from 2.7V to 5.5V at 4.2 megahertz One million cycles per second. See MHz.

MegaHertz - (MHz) Millions of cycles per second. The unit of frequency used to measure the clock rate of modern digital logic, including microprocessors.
(MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. ) and 4.5V to 5.5V at 8MHz, utilizing the dual clock feature. These new microcontrollers are well suited for use in battery operated or battery backup See UPS.  products, such as hand held devices. Typical standby current is 0.5 microamperes, while typical operating current is 2.5 to 8 milliamperes (mA).

The new 8-bit microcontrollers are also geared towards instrumentation, point-of-sale equipment and telecommunication devices such as pagers, cellular phones and central office equipment. The new devices contain a number of important architectural features including 16 register banks for fast context switching, instruction pre-fetch, a 16-bit stack pointer over the entire memory space, 20 addressing modes, 16-bit program counter and five power saving modes (STOP, SLOW, IDLE1, IDLE2 and SLEEP). The on-board LED driver is capable of driving eight output pins at 20mA which in turn eliminates the need for an external driver component. -0- Additional Features Include:
