ROBOT ENTERS OPTICAL RACE

The race to wire the world with optical capability--both backbone and in the metro access space--seems to be continuing unabated. In Toronto, however, laying fiber underground has taken on a new meaning. BREAKUP OF THE BELLS--AGAIN?

The four regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs) may be eight within five years, predicts CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. InfoTech also reports that the IP PBX market grew by 10% in the quarter, while traditional PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN).  sales remained flat.... IT security budgets are on the rise, says a study by security software developer Camelot (www.camelot.com). Nearly half the companies surveyed are increasing their network security software and hardware budgets.

CONTRACT WINS AND MARKET SHARE

IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM now has 25% of worldwide revenue market share and 22% of U.S. revenue market share.... Ericsson (www.ericsson.com) continues its growth in China, adding $163 million in contracts for GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations. , GSM, IP backbone and multiservice broadband projects.... Telecom Developpement, a French long-distance service provider, has chosen CIENA's (www.ciena.com) MultiWave CoreStream, 96-channel, intelligent optical transport platform to transport voice, data, Internet and video services.... TOWER Software (www.ustrim.com) will provide Texas-based EDS (Electronic Data Systems, Plano, TX, www.eds.com) Founded in 1962 by H. Ross Perot (independent candidate for the President of the U.S. in 1992), EDS is the largest outsourcing and data processing services organization in the country.  with electronic documents and records management solutions for EDS' provisioning of the Navy Marine Corps intranet.
