It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley.  after a commuter van hit a big rig Big Rig was a punk band from the San Francisco Bay Area fronted by singer/songwriter Jesse Michaels. Michaels performed with the group after the break up of his previous project, Operation Ivy, and before forming the band Common Rider. , triggering three additional crashes involving 10 vehicles.

The crash occurred at 6:50 a.m. near Sand Canyon Road in Canyon Country.

The driver of the van, Sheryl Thomas-Black, 40, of Palmdale was headed to the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  with nine passengers aboard. The van's left rear tire blew, and Thomas-Black lost control of the vehicle, which crossed lanes and sideswiped a big rig hauling dirt, Sweeney said.

The truck swerved and dragged the van into the center divider wall, skidding for several feet along the barrier. The wreckage blocked the lanes, pushing the heavy traffic onto the right shoulder, he said. The backup also gridlocked grid·lock
