EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  - Commuter buses are expected to start in February, serving Palmdale and Lancaster residents who work at Edwards Air Force Base.

``We think that it will be successful,'' said Randy Floyd, interim executive director of the Antelope Valley Transit Authority. ``We expect the service will pay for itself.''

Route times were not announced.

The AVTA AVTA Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity  is planning to charge $150 to $160 for monthly passes. However, there is a program that provides $100 vouchers for military personnel and federal employees that will make the passes more attractive, Floyd said.

About 80 percent of base personnel indicated they would consider using alternative transportation, according to the results of a survey released by the Air Force in July.
