Approximately two dozen young track and field athletes from Lane County and nearby coastal communities will compete in the 41st USA Track & Field Junior Olympic Championships at Mount San Antonio Mount San Antonio, better known to most in Los Angeles as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California, USA and the highest point in Los Angeles County. Mount San Antonio has two summits.  College in Walnut, Calif., Tuesday through Sunday. Among them are Track City Track Club's Rebekah Rust, 12, and Kristin Clark, 13. Rust, who will enter sixth grade at Cal Young Middle School in the fall, is one of the area's few competitive race walkers. She hopes for a personal best of 10 minutes, 50 seconds in the 1,500 meters, her last race at this distance before a 13th birthday pushes her into 3,000-meter races next year. Clark, a Cal Young eighth-grader, qualified in two events, winning the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 2 inches, and the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.86 seconds. A third place finish in the pentathlon pentathlon (pĕntăth`lən), composite athletic event. In ancient Greece it comprised leaping, foot racing, wrestling, discus throwing, and casting the javelin.  was one place away from qualifying in that event.

Achievements

Grant Carley, age 7, of Junction City Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley, , has qualified for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships in Pinehurst, N.C., for the second consecutive year. Carley qualified for the Aug. 2-4 event with a 2-under-par 34 in a recent qualifier at Kent, Wash.

The Sheldon Heat U14 girls soccer team won its division at the recent Rockwood Blast tournament in Portland. It was the fifth time in five tries this summer that the Kidsports team has made it to a tournament championship game.

Lane County Little League and District 9 has its first state champions in the form of a 10/11-year-old softball team of players combined from West Emerald, McKenzie and Willamette leagues.

Football coaches clinic: UO head coach Mike Bellotti Robert Michael Bellotti (b. December 21, 1950 in Sacramento, California) has been the head coach of the University of Oregon football team since 1995. His accomplishments at Oregon include an 11-1 season and #2 national ranking in 2001. Education

While meet officials expect most teams to form in advance, there will be opportunity for individuals and pairs to combine to form teams prior to the race. This race will be outside the limit of three events usually enforced. The meet begins at 5:30 p.m. with the relays taking place after 8 p.m. No relay races will be held during Thursday's final all-comers meet for ages 13 and older.

Skateboard competition: The second of four summer skateboard competitions conducted by Eugene Recreation's Outdoor Program is Friday at noon at west Eugene's Meadow View Skate Park. The competition will be open to all ages and all abilities, and a panel of three judges will rate contestants on overall use of the park, difficulty of tricks and style in each age bracket. Registration is $3 for all three remaining events and opens at 11 a.m. Friday. Contestants under age 18 must have a parent present for registration, and helmets are required at all times. Following Friday, competitions will be Aug. 10 at Willamalane Skate Park and Aug. 24 at Churchill Skate Park.

City league fall softball: Registration for the City of Eugene fall softball leagues will be accepted for returning fall teams Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Athletics office, 2700 Hilyard St. If there are openings, new teams may register beginning Thursday. Teams must submit a completed roster and full team entry fee of $290 at the time of registration. League play begins Aug. 27 and continues through early October. Three-on-three street basketball tournaments are scheduled in Hillsboro and Albany in the coming weeks. SATURDAY, AUG. 4 - South Coast Running Club's premier event of 2007 is the 34th annual Circle the Bay, a 30-kilometer event including a run, relay run, walk and relay walk. The walking events begin at 6:30 a.m. from Ferry Road Ferry Road is one of the major roads of Edinburgh, Scotland, and is often referred to as an area in its own right.
