COMMUNITY SPORTS PAGE.Byline: The Register-Guard When the Eugene Fencers Club The Fencers Club is the oldest continuously existing organization in the Western Hemisphere dedicated exclusively to teaching and promoting the sport of fencing. Established in Manhattan in 1883, the club has produced numerous National Champions and olympians. stages its WinterBlades team event next Saturday at Roosevelt Middle School, Catherine Suchan will find the action anything but dull. Eighteen months ago the Eugene mother took up the sport of fencing because her life was "getting dull." Now she is attending two practices per week that attract 25 to 45 students of the world's "oldest modern sport." Approximately two-thirds of the club members are high-school age and younger, but overall the ages range from 9 to 60. Suchan participates only in foil, a lighter weapon allowing quicker moves than epee or sabre. This week's tournament is conducted among three-person teams, while the club's March event is for individual competition. Admission is free Saturday, with foil competition beginning at 10 a.m., and epee at 1 p.m. in the cafeteria/small gym area on the back side of Roosevelt.
