COMMUNITY PSYCHIATRIC CENTERS' TRANSITIONAL HOSPITALS CORP. ACQUIRES CHICAGO HOSPITAL, OPENS LAS VEGAS AND ALBUQUERQUE FACILITIES

LAGUNA HILLS, Calif., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Transitional Hospitals Corp. (THC), the long-term critical care subsidiary of Community Psychiatric Centers (NYSE: CMY), has acquired a medical/surgical hospital in Chicago from Universal Health Services Inc. THC began accepting patients on Dec. 23 to THC Chicago, formerly known as Belmont Community Hospital. Although THC Chicago eventually plans to operate 107 beds following renovation, less than 30 beds will be operational during the initial stages, with more beds added as construction progresses.
THC Chicago was one of three hospitals added in December to the rapidly expanding THC national network, bringing the total number in operation at the end of 1993 to 10 hospitals in eight states. On Dec. 30, THC opened its previously announced acquisitions in Las Vegas and Albuquerque, N.M., upon completing extensive renovation projects to convert the facilities to long-term critical care use. THC Las Vegas has 52 beds and THC Albuquerque has 61 beds.
Other THC hospitals in operation are located in New Orleans (78 licensed beds), Arlington, Texas (80 beds), Tampa, Fla. (102 beds), Hollywood, Fla. (124 beds), Boston (88 beds), Indianapolis (38 beds), and Houston (41 beds). The THC units in New Orleans, Indianapolis, and Houston were developed by converting excess space in CPC psychiatric hospitals; Arlington, Tampa, Hollywood, and Boston are freestanding facilities.
The THC network specializes in the treatment of patients suffering from catastrophic illnesses or injuries and acute level chronic diseases who require a more intensive level of long-term care than can be provided at home, in a nursing home, or a rehabilitation unit. Atlanta- based THC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Community Psychiatric Centers, which delivers psychiatric and long-term critical care services through a total of 58 separately licensed facilities in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the United Kingdom.
