COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: GOLF TOURNEY TO ENLIGHTEN.

The Valencia High girls' golf team has come up with a bright idea. They've decided to host a ``glow ball'' golf tournament beginning at 8 p.m. Oct. 5 at Vista Valencia Golf Course. Golfers will hit translucent balls that have glow stick inside.

Proceeds benefit the team, and Vista Valencia tournament coordinator Cindy Tompkins expects a big success.

``It should be great and a lot of fun, even for beginning golfers,'' Tompkins said. ``The basic idea is just to have fun. We've done night tournaments before and had a phenomenal turnout.''

The entry cost is $25, which includes greens fees, prizes and dessert.

``We haven't figured out what the dessert is going to be yet,'' Tompkins said.

The nine-hole tournament should end about 10 p.m. Information: [phone].

--Add Vista Valencia: The course's annual Jack and Jill tournament, featuring coed twosomes, will be next Sunday at noon (shotgun start). Formats include scramble, best ball and alternate ball.

The entry fee is $60 for APGA members and $70 for nonmembers. The cost covers greens fees, carts, dinner and prizes.

--Local gymnasts impress: Kali Whitehurst, a 10-year-old gymnastics hopeful from Newhall, placed first last weekend in the vault and third all-around at the fall season's first USA Gymnastics meet at Gymnastics Unlimited in Valencia.

``Kali did very good,'' said Carol Stabisevschi, owner of Gymnastics Unlimited, noting that more than 140 youngsters from California, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico participated.

Several other locals turned in impressive performances in their age groups. Mia Davis, 10, of Valencia placed second in the floor exercise, fourth in the uneven bars and fourth all-around; Kristin Threw, 8, of Saugus finished third in the uneven bars, third in floor and fourth all-around, and Kamrin Megarit, 11, of Canyon Country was third in the balance beam and third all-around.

``The girls worked hard and did very good considering it was the first competitive meet,'' Stabisevschi said.

--Pop Warner teams win openers: Ryan Casselberry ran 75 yards for a touchdown to highlight the Santa Clarita Warriors' 16-14 victory over the Canyon Colts in the Pop Warner football opener (J1 division 10-12- year-olds) for both teams Sept. 14 at Hart High.

Ryan Zirbel added a 10-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Ryan Kasdorf ran for two 2-point conversions.

Linemen Michael Conway and Andrew Swick provided key blocking. C.J. Reyes recovered a fumble and recorded several tackles, and Spencer Green had a sack and knocked down a pass.

Other defensive standouts included Branden Reeves, Brad Kinzie, Daniel Safford, Dillon Jak and Dominic Pittman.

In other Pop Warner action, the Santa Clarita Apaches held host Camarillo to two first downs to win 26-0 in a J2 (12-13 year-olds) opener. Kevin Fulkerson intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter, returning one for a touchdown and the other to the 5 yard line. Timothy Safford had eight tackles, and Ry Biehanh added four tackles (two for losses) and knocked down a pass.

Matt Pearlman rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries, and David Alpert rushed for 69 yards on six carries.

--Kids making a lot of racket: The Pee Wee Tennis Program is accepting memberships for 4- to 6-year-olds at Spectrum Club in Valencia. There are a total of four sessions, beginning Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

``I've been doing this for 11 years and the kids love it,'' camp founder David Schwartz said. ``The best thing is we play indoors if the weather is too hot or too windy.''
