COMMUNITY NEWS SIXTH-GRADER WINS AWARD FOR LITERARY PIECE.


BURBANK - Hannah Kolus, 11, a sixth-grader at John Muir Middle School A middle school part of the Huron Valley School District located in Milford, MI. It is located in Milford, MI in Oakland County, MI. It is directly across the street from Baker Elementary.

Muir Middle School serves grades 6 through 8. The mascot is the Hawkeye.
 in Burbank, won the 2005 California State Award of Excellence for her literature entry in the PTA PTA or parent-teacher association: see parent education.  Reflections contest.

Her win marks the highest level any Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  student's literature entry has gone to in the national competition.

Her four-page essay, ``Love Emily,'' is a letter describing a young girl's relationship with another girl with a terminal illness.

Hannah and her parents will travel to Sacramento on April 30 to the state PTA convention, where she will read her piece to more than 1,000 delegates.

The National Award of Excellence for Literature will be announced at the convention.

Her work competed against that of about 20,000 students in her grade as well as those in the seventh and eighth grades.

 Valley residents raised more than $2,000 earlier this month at a fundraising dinner to send Camarillo High School senior Tory Smith to New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland.  to compete in an international equestrian competition.

Smith left home Wednesday and arrived in New Zealand on Thursday to represent the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  Pony Club in the New Zealand Horse Trials competition on April 21 and 24, according to family members.

About 100 people attended a fundraising dinner on April 9 in Thousand Oaks to raise money for Smith's trip.

The 18-year-old was chosen for the competition from among thousands of United States Pony Club members.

Students from high schools in Reseda and Moorpark were among five winners of the seventh annual Stan Chambers Journalism Awards essay competition, with $1,000 in prize money going to each.

The essay competition is designed to help high school seniors interested in news, journalism or related professions develop their skills.

Jessica Crawford of John R. Wooden High School in Reseda and Sergio Pacheco of Moorpark High School Moorpark High School, located in Moorpark, California, is a public high school in the Moorpark Unified School District and currently has an enrollment of 2,478 students.[1]  were among the winners.

Jessica wrote about her journey from being a troubled youth to a success- driven, focused honor roll student. After run-ins with the law, the harshness of life in a boot camp helped Jessica turn her life around.

Sergio wrote about his experience visiting his family's homeland, a remote Mexican village that lacked even basic necessities like running water. It gave him a new appreciation of his life in California.

The winning students will work with Chambers to produce a video essay of their work, to be aired on KTLA-TV (Channel 5) in June.
