COMMUNITY NEWS NORTH HOLLYWOOD STUDENT RECEIVES LANG SCHOLARSHIP.Kathleen Ryou, a senior at North Hollywood Highly Gifted Magnet High School, won one of five $3,000 scholarships presented by the Los Angeles Newspaper Group at last month's Experience College educational fair at the Los Angeles Convention Center. During the last year, Ryou participated in the Asian Pacific Leadership Project in Sacramento, where she debated the benefits of bilingual education on the state Senate floor. LANG includes the Daily News and seven other newspapers in the Southern California market. Ryou represents the Daily News' circulation area. ``We are delighted that we have so many talented students throughout the area we serve at the Daily News,'' Publisher Tracy Rafter said. ``We wish Kathleen all the best, and we wish success to all high school students in the area who are working hard on their grades as they prepare for their college education.'' A colored-pencil drawing by Janet Kim, a senior at Crescenta Valley High School, won the Congressional Arts Competition for the 29th Congressional District. Her artwork, ``Memories of Youth,'' will hang for a year in the U.S. Capitol, beginning June 14. Cellist Matthew Park, 14, of Granada Hills has been named as a Discovery Artist by the New West Symphony. Park attends Nobel Middle School and is the principal cellist in the Cal State Northridge Youth Orchestra. Also named as Discovery Artists were pianist Tiffany Chen of Moorpark; violinistsJennifer Liu of Oak Park and Katrina Schaefer of Ventura; and soprano Ariana Ariana or Aryana (both: ârēā`nə, –ă`nə), general name for the eastern provinces of the ancient Persian Empire. It was used to mean the regions S of the Oxus (modern Amu Darya) River; the regions to the north were called Transoxiana (see Sogdiana). Wyatt of Oak View. Scott Anderson, Travis Maggini and Roy Sherman, all of Agoura Hills, recently became Eagle Scouts during a triple Court of Honor held by Troop 127. For his community service project, Anderson, 18, led 55 volunteers in landscaping a troublesome slope of Agoura High. Maggini, 17, directed 40 volunteers in replacing a fence at Paramount Ranch. Sherman, 17, helped clear the historic racetrack at Paramount Ranch. Somnath Chattopadhyay, a professor at California State University, Northridge, received a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Army to develop electronic and optoelectronic devices for national security projects. The PacifiCare Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by PacifiCare Health Systems Inc., recently contributed $10,000 each to Pacific Lodge Youth Services in Woodland Hills, Meet Each Need with Dignity in Pacoima and Olive View/UCLA Medical Center Foundation in Sylmar. Helen Berman of Encino, executive administration of the UCLA Center on Aging, received an LA Pearl Senior Citizen of the Year Award from the city for her work on behalf of elderly residents. Berman helped direct the center's memory-enhancement program and also helped develop a program that encourages seniors to audit classes at UCLA. |
