 Nair, a junior at La Reina High School La Reina High School is a Catholic college preparatory junior and senior high school for girls. Nair is one of 30 students in the country accepted into the Los Angeles-area program, which was held this month at Claremont McKenna College A member of the Claremont Colleges, Claremont McKenna College is a small, highly selective, private coeducational, liberal arts college enrolling about 1100 students with a curricular emphasis on government, economics, and public policy. .

During the weeklong seminar, students were taught an economic way of thinking about human behavior and experienced the interaction of different leadership styles within a group.

Those selected for the program have demonstrated their leadership potential. Nair, for example, volunteers with Hospice and Sankara Eye Foundation Sankara Eye Foundation (SEF) is a non-profit based in the United States that works for eradicating curable blindness in India. SEF's mission is to realize the goal of 20/20 vision for the people of India by the year 2020.  and is serving her third year as a youth commissioner for the city of Thousand Oaks.

San Fernando Valley music students Maciej Flis, Jennifer Mitchelle and Anna Kostyuchek are among 87 classically trained musicians chosen for the full-scholarship program at the Henry Mancini Institute.

Flis of Studio City plays the bassoon; Mitchelle of Westlake Village plays the oboe. Kostyuchek is from Reseda.

The institute provides a four-week, intensive training program for college students and young professionals between 18 and 30 who want to pursue a career in music.

Fifteen San Fernando Valley high school students from 12 local campuses participated in a free, weeklong motivational program on careers in aviation and airport operations earlier this month.

The Aviation Career Education Academy, offered for the first time this summer at the Van Nuys Airport, gave students behind-the-scenes looks at airport facilities and activities and let them meet employees from a wide variety of trades and professions.

Jeffrey M. Balbien of Calabasas and Alex Gorbenko of Woodland Hills have earned 2004 Dean's partial-tuition scholarships to DeVry University campuses.

The scholarships are valued at up to $9,000 and are granted on the basis of ACT and SAT scores.

Balbien, a graduating senior from Calabasas High School, will attend DeVry's West Hills' campus. Gorbenko, a graduating senior from El Camino Real High School El Camino Real High School (also known locally as "ECR" and by some more recently as "ELCO") is a public secondary school located in the Woodland Hills district of the San Fernando Valley region of the city of Los Angeles, California. , also will attend the West Hills campus.

Anupama Rambhatla of Panorama City has been selected to join the National Society of High School Scholars The National Society of High School Scholars, or NSHSS, is a for-profit corporation[1] in the United States, founded in 2002 by Claes Nobel to recognize high school students. .

Rambhatla, a student at Van Nuys Medical Magnet High School, was chosen for her superior academic achievement.

The society recognizes outstanding students and its members have opportunities for scholarships, networking, publications and special events.
