COMMUNITY NEWS HOPEFUL STUDENTS SELLING ADS TO PAY FOR N.Y. TRIP.


GRANADA HILLS - Journalism students from Kennedy High School are trying to raise $5,000 to attend Columbia University's annual student journalism conference in March.

To do so, they are offering advertising in the school newspaper, The Word, which reaches an audience of more than 3,600 students, faculty and parents.

NORTHRIDGE - Vanessa Douglas, a graduate student in music at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , has won the Metropolitan Opera's Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  competition.

She will now go on to the national singing competition for the New York City-based opera as a western regional finalist.

Douglas, who sings opera and gives vocal, piano and theater performances, said she was pleased to win the Los Angeles competition.

``I did not start in opera but in gospel and jazz,'' she said. ``After my teachers heard me sing, they encouraged me to try opera. I like it because it is always exciting, different and multifaceted mul·ti·fac·et·ed

``Whatever four-year college I choose, and whoever chooses me, a scholarship like this will be a major help.''

Winners were chosen at random from a list of students nationwide who participated in the program.
