COMMUNITY NEWS CSUN STUDENT A FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR.


Lisa Baughn - a graduate student in the geography department at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an  - has earned a prestigious Fulbright scholarship Fulbright scholarship

Educational grant under an international exchange program created to increase understanding between the U.S. and other countries. The program was conceived by U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright and instituted by the Fulbright Act of 1946.
 to become a teaching assistant in Indonesia, the college announced last week.

``I'm at the point in my life where I'm really open to a new way of living,'' said Baughn, 26, of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , who will leave to begin her training this summer. ``I'm also extremely interested in what it will be like to be a woman in a Muslim country.''

Once in Indonesia, Baughn plans to implement a community literacy and American culture project, offering reading and writing instruction. She will also provide Western cultural activities involving books, the Internet, newspapers, field trips, slideshows and lectures on life in America.

``Lisa has cultural flexibility,'' geography department chair Antonio Hussey said. ``She'll be able to go to a foreign culture and have the awareness not to offend, but to become part of the culture.''

The Fulbright program provides grants for a variety of educational activities, including advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Arkansas Sen. J. William Fulbright James William Fulbright (April 9, 1905 – February 9, 1995) was a member of the United States Senate representing Arkansas. Fulbright was a Southern Democrat and a staunch multilateralist, supported racial segregation, supported the creation of the United Nations and opposed  introduced it in 1945.

Charles D. Schoor of Valley Village has been elected to the board of the Muscular Dystrophy Association The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is an organization founded in 1950 which combats muscular dystrophy and diseases of the nervous system and muscular system in general by funding research, providing medical and community services, and educating health professionals . He has served as the organization's national vice president since 2002.

``His experience, along with his compassion and commitment to our cause, will prove vitally important to our continued progress,'' said Robert Ross, the organization's president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. .

Schoor is a partner in the law firm of Blue and Schoor in Los Angeles.

Valley Interfaith Council will sponsor Citrus Sunday on April 9, when residents are asked to donate fruit from their backyard trees to help the homeless.

Students from Marymount High School Marymount High School is a private, Catholic, all-girls, college-preparatory high school located in West Los Angeles across from the UCLA campus at 10643 Sunset Blvd. Over 400 young women are enrolled at the school.  in Los Angeles donated books to several local public school libraries, including Roscoe Elementary in Sun Valley and NEW Academy in Canoga Park.

The 108 Marymount sophomores worked with the nonprofit organization Nonprofit Organization

An association that is given tax-free status. Donations to a non-profit organization are often tax deductible as well.

 BookEnds based in West Hills, which recycles children's books through student-run book drives throughout Southern California.

Along with the books, the Marymount students prepared reading lessons for the younger students based on their research of reading methods and learning, and using their own favorite childhood books.
