Christmas came early to this Mississippi riverboat community when the Davenport Riverboat Development Authority (RDA) yesterday awarded nearly $500,000 in gambling profits to 33 community groups with prospects of allocating up to another $400,000 next spring.
The money comes from profits the RDA has collected from The President Riverboat Casino, based in Davenport, Iowa, said RDA President Mary Ellen Chamberlin. The RDA holds the gambling license for the casino and collected $1 per visitor for the first 500,000 visitors and $1.50 per visitor for each additional guest during the year. Attendance at the riverboat -- the largest floating casino in the world -- has been so strong that the RDA met its first year revenue projections after just seven months, Chamberlin said.
Since it opened April 1, more than 760,000 visitors have boarded The President Riverboat Casino.
