Sporting brightly colored rain gear, Shirley Stiny of Granada Hills didn't seem to mind watching parade floats outside in the bone-chilling cold with her 7-1/2-month-old daughter, Julianne.

 mother-and-daughter pair were among the thousands of Valley residents who braved the chance of afternoon showers to attend the 14th annual Granada Hills Christmas Parade on Sunday.

``That's why I put her in a front carrier,'' explained Shirley, pointing to a strap-on pouch that attached at the shoulders. ``I can carry an umbrella just in case it rains.''

Thousands of fans lined the 2-mile route along Chatsworth Street between Zelzah and Petit PETIT, sometimes corrupted into petty. A French word signifying little, small. It is frequently used, as petit larceny, petit jury, petit treason.

The parade, sponsored by the American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross. , featured 180 entries with about 4,000 participants - including marching bands, vintage cars and such local celebrities as KNBC-TV (Channel 4) sportscaster Fred Rogin and former Assemblywoman Paula Boland.

A group of Granada Hills elementary school elementary school: see school.  students known as the Dancing Candy Canes entertained a cheering crowd as they performed a brief dance routine wearing plastic ponchos over their matching red and white outfits.

Luckily, most parade participants continued to march without a drop of rain, until the midafternoon when a light sprinkle increased to a heavy shower.
