COMMUNITIES PLAN EVENTS MARKING MEMORY OF KING.

LANCASTER - Community observances are planned for Saturday and Sunday in Lancaster and Palmdale in memory of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Los Angles County District Attorney Steve Cooley Stephen Lawrence ("Steve") Cooley (born May 1, 1947 in Los Angeles, California) is a veteran prosecutor who was elected as Los Angeles County's 36th District Attorney on November 7, 2000. He was sworn in for his second term on December 6, 2004.  will be the keynote speaker at the city of Lancaster's 12th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration.

The event will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre. , located at 750 W. Lancaster Blvd. Admission is free.

The 2001 program will feature a choir composed of local church members under the direction of Tom Bolin.

Joining Cooley will be Ulysses Chatman Jr., principal of the Juvenile Court juvenile court

Special court handling problems of delinquent, neglected, or abused children. Two types of cases are processed by a juvenile court: civil matters, often concerning care of an abandoned or impoverished child, and criminal matters, arising from antisocial
 and Community Schools, as a guest speaker.

Elementary, junior high and high school students who won a city essay contest will read their pieces reflecting on how King's work has played a role in their lives.

``It is important that our community see the efforts of others as we try to keep the dream of Dr. King alive,'' Vice Mayor Henry Hearns said. ``This holiday should highlight remembrance, celebration and action and encourage people to reflect on the principles of the messages of Dr. King.''

In Palmdale, Wake Up! Tomorrow's Here! the second annual dinner and celebration of King and other civil rights leaders Below is a list of civil rights leaders:

, will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Ramada ra·ma·da

Guest speakers will include Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Deputy District Attorney Brenda G. English; Palmdale Mayor James Ledford; Hearns; and Reena Evers-Everette, daughter of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers.

Also in Palmdale, the Dr. King Unity Celebration will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the United Christian Fellowship Church Christian Fellowship Church(CFC) is a non-denominational mega-church located in Evansville, Indiana. David Niednagel, the current senior pastor, founded the church in 1974. As of August 2007 the church has an average weekly attendance of 2,800 adults. , 37707 Palm Vista Avenue, behind Tumbleweed tumbleweed, any of several plants, particularly abundant in prairie and steppe regions, that commonly break from their roots at maturity and, drying into a rounded tangle of light, stiff branches, roll before the wind, covering long distances and scattering seed as  School.

The mayor will speak and entertainment will be provided by the Unity Chorus, made up of youths from Palmdale schools. Winners of an essay contest will have a chance to read their pieces to the audience. The program also will feature youth speakers reflecting on King's life.
