Voters face Friday deadline to stick ballots in the mail

Voters who have not received a ballot in the mail or are missing an envelope or ballot page should call Lane County Elections at 682-4234.

Ballots should be mailed to county elections by Friday, officials said. After Friday, voters should drop off ballots at official drop locations listed at www.co.lane.or.us/Elections/DropOff.htm or in the insert that came with the ballot.

Voters can update their registration and request a replacement ballot through Election Day, which is Tuesday. Voters can come to the elections office through Tuesday to update or request a replacement ballot.

All voted ballots must be received by 8 p.m. Tuesday for the ballot to be counted. Postmarks do not qualify.

Letter carriers to collect

People around Oregon can leave nonperishable food at their mailbox on Saturday for it to be collected by letter carriers as part of the annual National Association of Letter Carriers The National Association of Letter Carriers (or NALC) is a labor union for employees of the United States Postal Service who serve as letter carriers (informally, "mail carriers", "mailmen", or "postmen", although many are now in fact female).  Food Drive.

A yellow, plastic food drive bag should come with your mail this week. Fill the bag with nonperishable food and place it by your mailbox early on Saturday. Letter carriers will collect the food donations and take them to their local post office. All donated food stays in the community where it was collected.

Food donations can also be bought to any post office by Wednesday.

The nonprofit Neighborhood Economic Development Corporation will hold a Community Homeownership Workshop on Monday for first-time home buyers who want to learn more about purchasing real estate.

The class will be 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at NEDCO'S Home Ownership Center at 783 Grant St. in Eugene.

Topics include financial preparation for home buying, finding a good mortgage and how to deal with credit and debt issues. It also covers special loan and down payment assistance programs available to first-time and rural home buyers, including the Oregon State Bond low-interest loan, rural development loans and the PAL down payment assistance program available in rural areas.

Mother's Day Tea

The PeaceHealth Medical Group Nurse Midwifery midwifery (mĭd`wī'fərē), art of assisting at childbirth. The term midwife for centuries referred to a woman who was an overseer during the process of delivery. In ancient Greece and Rome, these women had some formal training.  Birth Center is hosting a Mother's Day Tea for families, including new and expectant mothers, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The center is located at 511 E. 12th Ave., Eugene.

The event is free and open to the public. Along with tea and cookies, the event includes music, family activities and prizes.

All types of items for small children - newborn to 4 years old - can be had at the Baby Barnyard Sale, which will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Petersen Barn Community Center.

Garage sale to benefit

Pleasant Hill schools

PLEASANT HILL - The Foundation Garage Sale, formerly the Booster Garage Sale, will take place Saturday and Sunday in the Pleasant Hill Junior High School gym.

People who want to donate items for the sale may come to the gym from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. To arrange to drop something off earlier, or to arrange a pickup, call Tia at 726-8993.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday (early birds can get in at 8 a.m. by paying $10) and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, with everything marked at least half off after noon.

All proceeds go to Pleasant Hill schools through the Pleasant Hill Foundation.

Summer Expo to provide

SPRINGFIELD - Willamalane Park and Recreation District is offering several programs geared toward school-age children this summer.

Parents can learn more about the activities by attending the Willamalane Summer Expo. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the district's Community Recreation Center, 250 S. 32nd St.

Refreshments, door prizes, face painting and games for kids will be offered at the expo.

businesses in spotlight

OAKRIDGE - The founder of a community-based entrepreneurship model will join area business owners and residents here today in celebrating the first anniversary of the Oakridge UPBEAT program.

Ernesto Sirolli of the Sirolli Institute will be among speakers at 1 p.m. at the Circle Bar Golf Course, 48447 Westoak Road. The gathering will spotlight seven new businesses and two business expansions under the Unique Program for Business Enhancement and Advancement Together.

The program provides residents of Oakridge and Westfir with free, confidential business management coaching using the Sirolli model, which aims to help small communities achieve economic stability by encouraging local entrepreneurs. Project coordinator Jenifer Hood helps clients find the right tools and personnel to meet the needs of their businesses.

Business license applications have tripled since UPBEAT started in May 2006. Seven more businesses are expected to open this year and generate up to 15 new jobs beyond the 11 created in the program's first year. UPBEAT has more than 50 clients, 33 of whom are actively working toward opening a business in Oakridge or Westfir. Many will display their products and services at the anniversary showcase and Taste of Oakridge event from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
