COMMISSION PRESIDENT COMPETING FOR JOB AS RENO AIDE.Byline: Rick Orlov Daily News Staff Writer Los Angeles Police Commission President Ray Fisher, a resident of Sherman Oaks, is in the running for a top job under Attorney General Janet Reno, sources said Wednesday. Officials in Washington, D.C., said Fisher is one of several people under consideration for the job of associate attorney general. ``He's definitely in play,'' said an official, who asked not to be named. Other contenders for the post were not identified. Fisher, who has chaired the Police Commission since August 1995, could not be reached for comment. As commission president, Fisher has played a major role in transforming the Los Angeles Police Department. Fisher has presided over the decision not to extend the contract of Police Chief Willie L. Williams and he played a role in expanding the force during the past two years. Fisher has a long history of civic involvement, having served as the general counsel to the Christopher Commission, which issued a list of recommended reforms after the Rodney King beating. Those proposals included creating a system for hiring police chiefs. Williams was the first chief hired under that process, which limited his tenure to a maximum of two five-year terms. Also, he served on the Los Angeles Civil Service Commission. |
