COMMISSION HITS THE ROAD TO STUDY SITE.

Byline: Heather MacDonald Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Planning Commissioner Dennis Ostrom squinted into the late afternoon sun, waving his arm to indicate where Golden Valley Road will be extended from Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  to Green Mountain Road.

``It doesn't really make sense until you see it,'' said Ostrom, the chairman of the commission, as he took a swig from a water bottle.

On Wednesday, Ostrom and the other commissioners toured the site of the proposed Newhall Estates, a 176-home development in the heart of the city. The commission will vote next month on a recommendation to the city council after reviewing the environmental impact report next week.

``We've just seen so many ridges come down in the valley,'' said resident Diane Southwell, who went on the tour with the commission with her husband, Jim. ``We're very concerned.''

After a twisting ride up to the summit of the proposed project site in an 11-person van, commissioners spent roughly an hour looking at the actual horseshoe-shaped canyon, along with maps and diagrams that depict de·pict

To make way for the homes, seven oak trees will be removed.  last week that they do not want Golden Valley Road to become a six-lane highway, as proposed. They said a four-lane highway would be sufficient.

``That is where my kids play after school,'' said Jacques Sandoval, who lives on Green Mountain Drive. ``I don't want to have to worry about them being hit by car.''

Sandoval and other residents asked the commission to consider setting a low speed limit on Golden Valley Road and prohibiting truck traffic from using it to get to the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California.  are bad and should not be allowed to get worse,'' said Otto Lindmann, who also lives on Green Mountain Road. ``The trucks should be rerouted to Sierra Highway.''

The neighbors' concerns prompted the planning commissioners to examine the intersection of Golden Valley and Green Mountain roads Wednesday. Ostrom promised that the commission would take a very close look at that issue next week.

The proposed development is exempt from the city's ordinance A law, statute, or regulation enacted by a Municipal Corporation.

An ordinance is a law passed by a municipal government. A municipality, such as a city, town, village, or borough, is a political subdivision of a state within which a municipal corporation has been
on hillsides and ridge lines under a settlement between the property owners and the city in February of 1996. The ordinance would have allowed no more than 150 homes on the site.
