THE PACESETTER

GENSLER Gensler is a San Francisco-based architecture firm that was founded by Art Gensler, Jim Follett, and Drue Gensler in 1966.

Gensler is the largest architecture firm in the United States and in the world, as well as the most profitable[1]

THE No. 1 commercial interior design firm in L.A. is Gensler, which is marking its 35th year in the business. It was named architecture firm of the year by the American Institute of Architects The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. Organized in 1857, the Institute conducts various activities and programs to support the profession and enhance its public image, including periodically awarding the AIA  in December December: see month. , the first time Gensler has received the award.

For the fiscal year ended March 31, Gensler generated revenue of $276 million. A total of $240 million came domestically and $36 million from international work.

San Francisco-based Gensler has 24 offices worldwide, with overseas locations including Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov. , London and Tokyo. Its newest facility is in Silicon Valley.

Having local offices in several cities worldwide allows the firm to be responsive to various distinct geographic tastes and trends, but the offices also regularly share information, expertise, and talent among themselves, depending on the requirements of a particular job, says Nila Leiserowitz, a company vice president. Monday morning conference calls between Art Gensler, chairman and chief executive, and his three managing directors enable the 24 offices to remain connected and updated on current clients.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

STAYING busy is not an issue for interior design firms in L.A. County.

The top 25 firms on this year's list reported a total 7.3 percent increase in revenue over the 25 firms listed in 1998. Total combined revenue among firms on this year's list were $112.1 million.

The number of staff designers at the top 25 firms increased to 613 -- up from 566 the prior year -- for an 83 percent increase.

One factor driving that growth has been the need for fast-growing companies to incorporate new amenities into their facilities, touches that will not only attract but also retain employees.

Among the hottest design requests are fitness centers, cafeterias, banking facilities, wellness centers (some with a staff physician), and indoor/outdoor meeting spaces that are fully wired so people can plug in laptops.

While most commercial interior design firms provide a variety of services beyond interior design -- such as strategic planning Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people. , organizational consulting, graphics and workplace management -- technology has become a driving force in all interior design planning.
