COMMERCE HUB GROWING CENTRE POINTE ENTERS FINAL BUILDING PHASE.Byline: Eugene Tong Staff Writer SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, - A patch of untouched ridge land and rusting industrial buildings is fast growing into a local commerce center with such diverse firms from distribution depots to fine-wine storage. The Centre Pointe Business Park - a development with more than 2 million square feet of mixed-use commercial and residential space just south of Soledad Canyon Road between the Saugus Speedway and Ruether Avenue - is nearly two-thirds complete since first breaking ground in 2001. But city officials and builders are salivating over the final phase, with 170,000 square feet of warehouse space, 40,000 square feet of office space, residential units and a retail center anchored by Wal-Mart and its membership store Sam's Club. It is about 10 percent complete and is expected to be completed within two years, said Randy Wrage, a developer behind the project. ``It's going to be at a crossroad of Golden Valley (Road) and Soledad,'' said Wrage, an associate of Spirit Holdings, the local developer behind Centre Pointe. ``The mantra, as it is with a lot of development in California, is live, work and play.'' Paul Brotzman, the city's planning and economic development director, is optimistic about the project's prospects. ``They're going to provide a number of different opportunities for the residents and for the city,'' he said. ``Obviously, they provide jobs and more shopping opportunities, and they will attract more businesses to that location.''
