He is Member of Parliament for Southport, representing the Liberal Democrats. First elected in 2001 with a majority of 3,007, he was re-elected in 2005 with a slightly increased majority of 3,838. , Lib-Dem MP for Southport, is critical of the secretive and the undemocratic nature of the North West Regional Assembly in its recommendations to allocate more funds to Manchester than to Liverpool. At least one Lib-Dem is managing to function in spite of the party's internal troubles and uncertainty and he made an excellent point. It is inevitable that the North West Regional Assembly will be secretive, why should it be anything else? The people of the North West pay pounds 2.7m to keep it going, but they never have an opportunity to vote for its members and it exists because the EU Commissioners want it.
