PALMDALE - Palmdale took delivery Tuesday of a 10 1/2-ton, $255,000 diesel-powered mobile command post.

The motor home-like vehicle can be used in situations ranging from a major earthquake to city fairs to police investigations like last weekend's double shooting in a west-side neighborhood, officials said.

``You're always ready to go - everything you need is right here,'' public safety administrator Anne Ambrose said.

A U.S. Department of Justice grant paid for 90 percent of the cost. The city paid the rest. The city is spending an additional $15,000 to add more equipment.

The vehicle's green, yellow and white exterior will get Palmdale and Sheriff's Department logos.

The command post looks similar to a motor home, but it is actually a custom-made vehicle that is sturdier than a converted motor home would be, officials said. It was created to city and sheriff's officials' specifications by Wisconsin Wisconsin, state, United States

``This isn't a motor home that was converted,'' sheriff's Sgt. Dave Sauer said. ``This was built from the ground up to be a command post.''

Inside it has telephones that take cellular signals or plug into conventional phone lines, radios to communicate on sheriff's, California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Highway Patrol highway patrol

It also has a small microwave oven, refrigerator, sink and coffee maker.

The vehicle is due to get a microwave receiver that would let officials pick up television signals from news media helicopters, for replaying on a video monitor in the vehicle's tiny conference room.

``We have the ability to capture that information and bring it right here,'' Sauer said.

The vehicle is 32 feet long and the maximum size that can be driven with a standard license rather than a truck license.
