COMING THROUGH IN A PINCH : QUAKES CATCHER BLASTS GAME-WINNING BASE HIT IN 7TH.

Byline: Bryan Winchell Special to the Daily News

Rancho Cucamonga's Ben Davis Ben Davis may refer to:

is one of the California League's top prospects.

Only 19 years old, Davis was the San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  Padres' No. 1 pick and second overall selection in the 1995 June draft.

But entering Thursday night's game with Lancaster at the Epicenter, he was hitting only .196 in 153 at-bats.

And in his first three at-bats Thursday, he saw only four pitches and grounded out twice and flew out.

without having seen action above rookie ball, Davis was obviously struggling in the Cal League, where 19-year-old players are as uncommon as former major leaguers.

But Davis, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound catcher, came through with what turned out to be the game-winning hit in the seventh inning.

With the Quakes ahead 4-2 and threatening with runners on first and second, the JetHawks brought in crafty right-hander John Daniels John Daniels could refer to:
  • John C. Daniels, a mayor of New Haven, Connecticut
  • John Dennis Daniels, a convicted murderer
  • Jon Daniels, the current general manager of the American baseball club the Texas Rangers

The first batter, Darryl Brinkley, drove center fielder Shane Monahan to the warning track for the out, but the runners advanced.

With Juan Melo, the Padres' No. 10 prospect by Baseball America, up and having hit a two-run, two-out triple in the second inning, Lancaster seemed in trouble.

But Melo whiffed at three straight pitches, the fastest coming in at 80 mph.

That brought up Davis who worked the count to 3-2 before he dropped a single into left-center for two RBI RBI

Lancaster responded with a two-run eighth inning but couldn't score in the ninth.

``That base hit was the whole key to the ballgame,'' Lancaster manager Dave Brundage said.

The first time he faced Lancaster was in the thick of last week's pennant Pennant

This time around, he worked ahead in the count, throwing only 74 pitches in five innings and allowing four hits and two runs while striking out six.

The only mistakes he made were a two-out RBI-double to Chris Dean in the second inning and a triple to Monahan in the third.

``He didn't look that much different,'' Brundage said. ``He worked his ball down more. He wasn't as wild. Last time he wasn't getting his breaking ball down and I think for him to be effective he's got to keep it down.''

Extra bases: The win Thursday gave Rancho Cucamonga Rancho Cucamonga (răn`chō k'kəmäng`gə), city (1990 pop. 101,409), San Bernardino co., S Calif.  a 7-6 lead in the series between the two Southern Division rivals.

Both teams have done better in their home ballparks, with Lancaster going 4-3 at the Hangar and the Quakes going 4-2 at the Epicenter.

``They've got a good ballclub,'' JetHawks infielder Jason Cook Jason John Cook (born September 13, 1980) is an American actor best known for playing the role of Shawn-Douglas Brady on the soap opera Days of Our Lives.
