State Sen. W.J. ``Pete'' Knight endorsed plans for the new veterans home in Lancaster on Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week.  afternoon before the final performance of ``A Piece of My Heart'' at the Palmdale Playhouse.

Proceeds for the six performances will go to helping the home.

``Veterans are a special breed and a very important part of our community,'' Knight said. ``This community has come and shown the veterans home a lot of support. I think it's important that we do what we can for the veterans who sacrificed for us.''

The veterans home, which will be located on 30th Street West and Avenue I, is scheduled for construction in early 2001.

This event gave us public visibility so that at the right time we will receive more help and support from the community.''

The new veterans home will house 400 residents and employ 230 people. Craft said that nearly 100 veterans have expressed interest in living there.

The funding from the state will only provide for construction of the home.

Proceeds from the play and other donations will help provide for books, pool tables, televisions, VCRs and other amenities.
