ELMIRA - Brodie Davis is fired up.

It's the first day of practice and Davis is still steaming from his frat-like initiation into the Sky-Em League last year as the Elmira Falcons' sophomore starting quarterback.

," Davis said. "I want to throw, at most, three interceptions in the season. That's a high goal, but you have to set your limits high. And I think I can fulfill that."

Davis returns with a core group of juniors who were thrown into the mix prematurely as sophomores. He hopes his teammates will take notice of his intensity.

"Obviously we're upset about having a 1-9 season, and we're going to come out and step it up," he said. "People underestimate us, but they shouldn't. We're going to be a lot better than they think. What other team had 10 sophomores playing on varsity?"

"Last year was pretty rough on those sophomores," Miller said. "They should've had another year in JV, but I had no choice."

Davis admitted he tried to do too much at times last season, which often led to turnovers. He believes he has matured.

"I'm working on not making rookie mistakes," he said. "I've learned it's better to get our punter Punter

In the offseason, the challenge for Davis turned from opposing defenses to classmates Classmates can refer to either:

who opposed his recruiting pitch. Hoping to boost the team's turnout, Davis approached a number of prospects but received little interest.

"It's hard to beg people to come out here," he said. "People are dying at other schools for the chance to get that varsity spot, and we're trying to fill those spots and beg people to come out."

Just 19 players suited up for the Falcons' first practice of fall camp. By the second week, with enthusiasm aroused and the proper paperwork completed, the turnout nearly doubled.

about what we can do," Miller said. "We can only go up from what we did last season."

Junior Chad Delaney, a two-way starter, returns as a versatile threat at H-back. He'll be counted on to help bolster the league's worst offense (13.5 points per game) and the worst defense (51.5 ppg) from 2006.

"I'm looking to carry the ball for us a little bit more and be a receiver and just make some plays," Delaney said.

Junior Carlos Real should be Davis' top option at wide receiver, and senior Cody Smith will lead both lines.

After a year in the system, Miller wants to open up the playbook for Davis.

"Last year he struggled with with his decision-making, when to throw it away or when to take a sack, things a young kid struggles with," Miller said. "This year it's a night-and-day difference. He's our team leader. He's in the weight room every day and he's worked hard ... I tried to keep it simple (for Davis) last year, but this year it's going to be quite a bit more complex with the passing system, and he's ready for it."

Expectations are tempered some by a lack of depth. The Falcons will look to parlay An open programming interface (API) to a service provider's network (the network operator), developed by the Parlay Group (www.parlay.org). By enabling the customer's application to talk directly to the network, it allows the end user to have greater access to network information as well  improvements this season into an even stronger 2008 season.

By then, those sophomores from last year will be seniors, eager to return the hazing rites to the rest of the league.

The Falcons were encouraged by their play over the summer in a Springfield passing league. Even without Carlos Real, their top returning WR, the Falcons held their own against some of the areas Class 6A and 5A teams. "It was good to show we could hang with the top talent," QB Brodie Davis said. ... Despite four interceptions in the game, Davis went 19-for-40 for 202 yards and two TDs in a loss to Sisters. ... Chad Delaney scored two touchdowns in a loss to Marist. ... Elmira's lone victory in 2006 was a 43-35 overtime win over Waldport, a Class 3A team. The Falcons nonleague schedule this season includes three 3A teams - Waldport, Creswell and Cascade.

their pride and "feel good about what we're doing," coach Chris Miller said. So far, not-so good: The Falcons fourth-quarter rally fell just short in a 21-18 season-opening loss at Creswell last Friday.

Stay healthy. It's certainly a top priority for every team, but perhaps for Elmira more so than anyone. With little depth, the Falcons would be hit hard by any lingering injuries to key personnel. "We can't afford to lose anybody," Miller said.

Resilience. Against a stacked Sky-Em League, the Falcons are bound to get knocked down. Can they get back up?

The Falcons' nucleus was sophomores last year in Miller's first season as coach. That group is now juniors with some experience and higher hopes. Lack of size and depth make playoff berth a long shot, though the Falcons could establish themselves for a strong 2008 season.
