One tribute is by North Carolina-based artist Joe Martin, creator of ``Willy 'n Ethel.'' Today's installment shows Willy, Ethel and the family painting a flag across the roof of their apartment, then saluting after they finished. ``I think it's the cartoonist's job to make people laugh,'' Martin said. ``I wanted the strip to be humorous - to show that Willy is trying to be patriotic and thoughtful but still gets himself into a jam, by literally painting himself into a corner of the building. You get the point across with a laugh.'' The call for tributes in the comic strips came from the National Cartoonists Society The National Cartoonists Society is the world's largest organization of professional cartoonists. It presents the Reuben Awards.
