COMIC FINDS HUMOR IN HOLLYWOOD.

Byline: Jim Skeen Daily News Staff Writer

Laura Hayes says she plans ``an evening of down-home realness'' for her comedy shows in Palmdale.

Hayes, who portrays Miss Laura on the BET cable channel's ``Nuthin' But a Woman,'' plans to talk about being a fortysomething African-American woman in Hollywood and raising her children and grandchildren GRANDCHILDREN, domestic relations.  comedy and television appearances began with a seven-month stint in a county jail in 1975 for a theft she says she didn't commit.

Hayes, who says she used to steal women's clothes and then sell them, figured the jail term was payment for past offenses - just not the one for which she got arrested.

``I had to totally remake myself,'' Hayes said. ``I had no skills and my children were asking questions like: Where do you work? I grew up at age 33.''

Hayes enrolled at a community college in Oakland and took a variety of classes in search of a career. One semester, on a lark, she decided to take a theater-arts class. She learned that she loved acting.

``I just didn't know how to make money out of it,'' Hayes said.

Hayes eventually found work for an Oakland theater group - first as an office manager and then as a performer.

The director of the theater group, Tony Spires - now her manager - told her that standup comedy is one path to being discovered. So Hayes began working nightclubs.

Hayes also has a recurring role as Mattie on Fox Television's ``Martin'' and has been a guest actor on WB's ``The Parenthood'' and ABC's ``Hangin' with Mr. Cooper Hangin' with Mr. Cooper is an American television sitcom that originally aired on ABC from 1992 to 1997, starring Mark Curry and Holly Robinson. ``I want to do some serious stuff,'' Hayes said of her acting. ``I want to generate some thought in people.''
