COMES DOWN TO A PAIR RIO MESA, CAMARILLO LOOK TO DOMINATE.

Byline: IVAN OROZCO Staff Writer

Like other coaches, Rio Mesa High of Oxnard coach Bob Gregorchuk doesn't like to make predictions. When he does, he isn't about to promote his team.

The Spartans are, no question, a contender for the Pacific View League football championship, and Gregorchuk knows it. Even if he won't say so.

``I like to wait and see how it plays out on the field,'' Gregorchuk said. ``I never pick us to be first because too much goes on throughout the season. Especially during the rivalry Rivalry

Rio Mesa and Camarillo are expected to battle again for the title, just like last year, just like 2004, when the Spartans won the decider.

``We try not to look forward to that game,'' Gregorchuk said. ``We try to take it one week at a time It's now officially Saturday and on 1116SEN it's time for 'One Week At A Time' with your hosts Mark Franklin and Luke Mather.

The rivalry is about more than championships. Players from both schools grew up together, and some Rio Mesa players live closer to Camarillo than their school.

Lewis has rushed for 2,337 yards as a Spartan, 536 yards shy of the Rio Mesa career record held by Mike Uratio (1975-77). He's expected to follow lead blocker Ina Liaina, a hard-nosed fullback, and an offensive line led by guard Jake Herrera, to the record.

The Spartans will rely on a more balanced offense, with quarterback Shane Austin throwing to Division I-caliber receiver Josh Harrison and fellow senior Jeremy Shiffman.

Camarillo will be led by USC-bound quarterback Samson Szakacsy, who passed for 1,959 yards and 23 TDs in 2005.

``With (Szakacsy) out there, it's like having a coach on the field,'' Riedmiller said. ``This year, he got a fantastic grasp of our offense, and he's good at picking up and reading defenses.''

``The guys we have give us a good chance at the title,'' Riedmiller said. ``If it's certainly coming down to Camarillo-Rio Mesa, that's OK with me. I'm sure others have something to say about that.''

Oxnard and Pacifica of Oxnard will look to put up a challenge. Oxnard returns running backs in William Franklin William Franklin (1731-December 13, 1813) was the last Colonial Governor of New Jersey.
