Jessica Cosby won her third consecutive City Section shot put title and finished fifth in the state meet less than two months after arthroscopic surgery Arthroscopic Surgery Definition

The UCLA-bound Cosby will begin her comeback in the 40th L.A. Invitational today. Cosby, who is still undergoing weekly physical therapy, wore a leg brace for 3 1/2 months and skipped basketball as a precaution.

``I did not want to rush it and not be able to do track,'' Cosby said. ``I feel strong enough to compete. I am ready to go and I think I will be fine.''

Despite the injury, Cosby unleashed a region-leading and personal-best 45 feet, 6 1/2 inches to win the City title. This season, Cosby is gunning for 50 feet and bidding to become the section's first athlete to win four titles in the same event.

``If you throw 50 feet in high school, that is something to be really, really proud of,'' Cosby said. ``It is something golden and a great feat to have on my scorecard. It just made me think what I could have really done if I had not gotten hurt. It has motivated me to work harder to go and get it.''

State champions Anita Siraki of Hoover and Rhuben Williams of Eagle Rock will also be looking to use the L.A. Invitational as a springboard.

Siraki, a junior, will compete in the girls' seeded mile. Siraki won the state Division I cross country title in November and placed fourth in the Foot Locker Foot Locker, Inc. During the fall, the UCLA-bound Flores won her second consecutive City title and became the first City athlete to compete in the Foot Locker national championships.
