And the football team is making a pretty good comeback of its own.

From 1961 to 1965, he coached at Cornell, where he compiled a 19-23-3 record. From 1966 to 1970, he coached at Duke, where he compiled a 22-23-1 record. , the Highlanders are 3-0, already equaling their win total of the previous three seasons.

That makes me proud to be a Granada Hills football player.''

In different forms it was played by peoples of nearly all lands throughout the ages.  is obvious: The Highlanders' three wins have come by an average of 22 points. Last year Granada Hills lost its first three by an average of 26. But the coaches, preparing the Highlanders for Friday's Northwest Valley Conference opener against visiting Birmingham (1-2), insist the credit belongs to the players.

``We're very pleased so far,'' Stroh said, ``but the kids are the ones who should be getting the recognition. They should not be left out. They're a good group and they've worked really hard. This team has given us everything we've asked.''

Gunny has 12 receptions for 248 yards (20.7 average) and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jason Winn is 29 of 63 (46 percent) for 547 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. Winn's 150.39 efficiency rating is seventh among City passers. The defense ranks No. 2 in the City Section, allowing just 160.3 yards per game, 45 rushing.

Gunny said his team's success - Friday's 34-14 win snapped a losing streak A Losing Streak is the third episode of series 2 of the BBC sit-com, Only Fools and Horses. It was first broadcast on 4 November 1982. Synopsis

``I think we're doing so well because we practice really hard,'' Gunny said. ``Every week we're been very prepared and confident about what we have to do. The coaching is just a lot better. They show us exactly what to do and there's no messing around out there.''

The previous three years have seen no shortage of talented football players. The difference? Harp and Stroh have provided discipline.

``I think discipline is something our coaching staff has emphasized and focused on from the beginning,'' Harp said. ``Going into this season, we basically were starting over. We've been nervous every game because we really didn't know what to expect. But so far, so good. The kids have worked hard and it's shown on Friday nights.''

Stroh began coaching at Granada Hills as an assistant in 1964, taking over as head coach in 1985 with Harp as offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during . The Highlanders won City championships in 1970 and 1987 before Stroh stepped down in 1993, followed by Harp's resignation in 1994.

``They're professionals with a lot of experience and a long-standing tradition of excellence,'' school principal Kathy Rattay said. ``They have really inspired the kids. The coaches have worked long and hard to get the players in shape. Once they started to win, the players' belief system changed, and when the belief system changes, the work ethic work ethic

Harp feels there is a good vibe on campus for the first time in a long time.

``Everybody likes a winner,'' he said. ``I think a football team sets the mood at school in a lot of ways. It's a pride factor.''
