 COMBINATION OF FILENE'S AND G. FOX ANNOUNCED BY MAY DEPARTMENT STORES
 ST. LOUIS, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today announced that it is combining its Filene's, Boston, and G. Fox, Hartford, divisions effective Jan. 30, 1993. The combined division, which will be headquartered in Boston and operate as Filene's, will have 33 stores with sales of $1 billion.
 Eugene S. Kahn, currently president and chief executive officer of G. Fox, will become president and chief executive officer of the combined division, effective October 1. Heywood L. Wilansky, currently president and chief executive officer of Filene's, will become president of Foley's, Houston, and on February 1 will assume the additional title of chief executive officer upon the planned retirement of Michael Steinberg. Joseph M. Melvin and Donald R. Andrus continue as chairmen of Filene's and Foley's, respectively.
 In making the announcement, May President Thomas A. Hays said, "We believe this $1 billion store company with 33 stores will be better positioned to serve all of Filene's and G. Fox's customers. It will be the dominant department store serving the New England region, with centralized buying, administrative and marketing functions to provide both cost savings and operating efficiencies."
 Mr. Kahn is a 21-year veteran of retailing. He assumed his position with G. Fox in 1990. Mr. Wilansky, a 22-year veteran of retailing, served with the company's Hecht's and Lord & Taylor divisions prior to being named Filene's president and chief executive officer in 1991. Mr. Steinberg began his retail career 27 years ago, and was named Foley's president in 1985.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 318 department stores and 3,425 Payless ShoeSource stores. May Company sales in 1991 were $10.4 billion, including $500 million from Filene's and $456 million from G. Fox.
