COLUMBUS LANDING PROJECT GETS OK.
After nearly two years of delays caused by environmental concerns,
the Puerto Rico Planning Board approved plans for the US$164 million
Christopher Columbus Landing project in Aguadilla. Koeniger Development
Inc. of Louisiana, has received approval to build six condos (340
units), four condo-hotel buildings (160 rooms), a 300-room hotel with
casino, and 75,000 square feet of commercial tourist space. Koeniger
now faces an uphill battle of now obtaining financing, and dealing with
possible lawsuits from local environmental groups which contend that the
beachfront property, known as "The Wilderness" to surfers
around the world, should remain pristine, reports The San Juan Star
(April 8, 1999).
