COLTEC AWARDED $19 MILLION CONTRACT FOR SEALIFT ENGINES

NEW YORK, Dec. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Fairbanks Morse Engine Division of Coltec Industries Inc (NYSE: COT) has received a firm order valued in excess of $19 million to produce four engines and related equipment that will propel the first new ship in the nation's Sealift program and options valued in excess of $95 million to produce engines that will propel five additional ships in the Sealift fleet.
The four engines for the first ship, designated the TAKR 300, are scheduled to be delivered to Avondale Shipyards, the New Orleans-based shipbuilder, in 1995. If the options are converted to firm orders by the U.S. Navy, four engines would be delivered each year beginning in 1996 and ending in 2000.
The engines specified in the firm order and options are Fairbanks Morse Engine's 10-cylinder, Colt-Pielstick PC4.2 engine, each rated at 16,290 horsepower. These Sealift ships, which will augment the nation's sealift capacity, are designed so wheeled and tracked vehicles can roll on and off. The Sealift fleet is being created to transport tanks, trucks and other U.S. Army equipment around the world rapidly. Each ship is to be 950 feet long and is designed to cruise at 24 knots.
Fairbanks Morse Engine, based in Beloit, Wis., manufactures large, heavy-duty diesel, gas and dual-fuel engines for marine propulsion, the oil and gas industry and for stationary and marine power generation.
Coltec Industries is a New York-based manufacturing company serving aerospace, automotive and other industrial markets.
