 Band during football season, the school's color guard is taking off to compete on its own.

For the first time, this competition will take the squad to the International World Championships in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  this spring.

Led by instructor Lorraine Kohagen, the 15 girls competed at Riverside Community College In addition to the main campus located in downtown Riverside, there are also satellite campuses located in Moreno Valley, Norco, Ben Clark Public Safety Training Center, and the Rubidoux Annex in Rubidoux.  Feb. 14-15 and placed ninth. They face another regional competition in Hayward at the end of March. The regionals will seed the team for their place in the championships.

``I think they'll at least make the semifinals, which is pretty good considering we've never gone before,'' said Kohagen.

In San Diego, the Littlerock team will face 120 teams from all over the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada.

``This is by far the biggest thing they've ever gone to,'' added Kohagen.

During the championships, the team's performance will be judged on dance and use of flags, sabers and rifles in its routine.

The girls practice every weekday morning for 60 to 90 minutes and an additional four hours on Tuesday afternoons. During summer vacation Summer vacation (also called summer holidays or summer break) is a vacation in the summertime between school years in which students are off for 3 months, depending on the country and district. , they come to school to practice two days a week.

The team usually competes an average of 10 times each year, including two competitions that it hosts at Littlerock High.

Six of the girls were also chosen to perform in the Pasadena City College's Tournament of Roses Honor Band.

Kohagen, who was in color guard herself in high school, has taught at Littlerock for nine years and instructed the color guard for seven of those years.

``They're just really fun to work with,'' said Kohagen of the girls. ``They work really hard.''
