COLON IS ACE IN HOLE PITCHER OUTDUELS ZITO IN ANGELS WIN ANGELS 6, OAKLAND 1.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

OAKLAND - The Big Three are no more, having been downsized to a Questionable One by a general manager driven by financial reality.

So with the Oakland Athletics' three-headed pitching monster down to the talented but doubt-ridden Barry Zito Barry William Zito (born May 13 1978 in Las Vegas, Nevada) is a starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. He previously played seven seasons with the Oakland Athletics. , Angels right-hander Bartolo Colon had an early opportunity Friday to show he's now the biggest hoss in the American League West The American League West is one of three divisions in Major League Baseball's American League. The division currently has four teams, but it has had as many as seven teams before the 1994 realignment. . And in allowing just two A's to reach base in seven innings, giving up one run and striking out five, Colon may have proved just that.

Colon picked up steam with every inning while Zito lost a shutout and then a lead in a decisive seventh inning as the Angels got the jump on the new-look A's with a 6-1 victory Friday.

Colon and Zito (USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. ) each had career-defining starts here six months ago, when Colon threw seven shutout innings to bring the Angels within a game of the division title. The next day, Zito removed himself with a 4-2 lead after seven innings and 114 pitches, only to see his bullpen implode To link component pieces to a major assembly. Friday, he was the Zito of old, shutting out the Angels for six innings. But Colon was better.

He retired the first nine A's until Mark Kotsay hit a leadoff double in the fourth. Scott Hatteberg drove him home for a 1-0 lead.

And those were the only Oakland hitters to reach base all night.

Colon (2-1) only got better, finishing his night with strikeouts of Scott Hatteberg and Erubiel Durazo, the first punchout clocked at 97 mph on the McAfee Stadium radar gun, the latter at 95 mph.

Meanwhile, Zito (0-3) coasted through the Angels' lineup, spacing out harmless singles in the fourth, fifth and sixth, but with one out in the seventh, he hit Steve Finley for the second time.

One out later, Zito floated a changeup over the middle of the plate and Robb Quinlan knocked it into left field, where Eric Byrnes slid awkwardly and fumbled the ball, enabling Finley to coast home with the tying run.

single, it was 2-1 and Zito's previous handiwork was wasted, though he did post an eight-inning, four-hit, six-strikeout night.

Scot Shields followed Colon with a scoreless eighth, and the Angels broke it open in the ninth on Finley's first homer, RBI singles from Chone Figgins and Vladimir Guerrero and an error on Oakland right fielder Charles Thomas.

The final result was far messier than the previous eight innings. Zito did a number on Guerrero, getting him out four times and even sneaking a high 88-mph fastball by him on a 3-1 count in the sixth. Guerrero grounded out on the next pitch.

Colon was similarly efficient, retiring the final nine A's after Hatteberg's single in the fourth.
