Byline: Keven Chavez Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - Just four weeks remain in the regular season, and the Angels and a sellout crowd of 43,757 at Angel Stadium watched a year's worth of hope flash before their eyes Sunday.

The Angels would not be in first place in the AL West without Colon, and they likely won't have much chance of playing five weeks from now without him.

Colon left with tightness in his left lower back, an injury the pitcher said he's been dealing with since his 9 1/3-inning outing Tuesday against Oakland.

``It wasn't just during the game - the last four days it's been getting tight on me,'' Colon said through an interpreter. ``It's been four days of pain in my back.''

Colon cruised for the better part of his first five innings Sunday. He allowed just four hits and one run and struck out five Mariners batters.

Leading 5-1 in the sixth, he surrendered a leadoff triple to Seattle center Seattle Center is a fairground, park and arts and entertainment center in Seattle, Washington. ``He didn't look like he really followed through the way that he can, and he didn't look like he was able to get after it as much,'' Scioscia said. ``This type of thing you want to get out and head it off instead of waiting another 10 pitches to find out if he's getting to the point where he can't stay with his mechanics.''

Colon was pulled from a spring-training start after two innings after tweaking tweaking Vox populi Fine-tuning to produce optimal results  his back running out a double. He returned from that injury within a week.

Colon was checked by team doctors after Sunday's start, and no further examinations are scheduled. Colon's next start is tentatively scheduled for Saturday against Chicago, assuming the Angels remain in rotation after an off day today.

``We won't know for a couple days, but we don't anticipate (him missing a start),'' Scioscia said.

Said Colon: ``Right now, it's hard to tell, but it's very tight right now. With the off day (today), it shouldn't be a problem.''

Colon was staked to an early five-run lead by a three-run home run by Casey Kotchman in the second inning and a two-run homer by Vladimir Guerrero in the third.

Colon pitched the requisite five innings to earn his AL-best 18th win, improving to 18-6.

Both Angels home runs came off Seattle starter Jeff Harris (2-2), who lasted just three innings and took the loss.

Brendan Donnelly and Scot Shields bounced back from poor outings Saturday, each pitching a scoreless inning of relief. Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 34th save.
