The robbery, which occurred Monday, is the latest in a string of jewelry salesmen holdups that investigators believe are the work of a 200-member ring of Colombians. ``We keep kinda chipping away at the suspects, but there's a never-ending tide of these guys,'' said Los Angeles police Detective Michael Woodings, part of a 15-member jewelry heist task force.

In an effort to catch the elusive crooks, police added patrols around the L.A. Jewelry Mart, where the robbers are believed to identify many of their victims.

The robberies are not confined to South Los Angeles, though. Police have recorded more than eight such incidents in the San Fernando Valley so far this year.
